Sports Star of the Week
Michael Durcan
Teenage golfer Michael Durcan is this week’s Enda McCarrick Motors Limited Sligo Post Sports Star of the Week.
The Rosses Point man put in an impressive display as the sole Sligo representative at the AIB Irish Amateur Open in Royal Dublin Golf Club at the weekend.
Playing among a largely international field of some of Europe’s top amateurs, Durcan was among the leaders after a brilliant first round of 72.
A second round of 79 set the County Sligo Golf Club member back a little however, and he narrowly missed the cut.
The Irish U18 international qualified for the Open by reaching the matchplay stages of the Radisson West of Ireland Golf Championship earlier this year in Rosses Point, losing out narrowly to eventual winner Shane Lowry in that competition.
Already this year, 16-year-old Durcan has tasted success as an integral part of the Sligo Grammar School team that won both the Irish Schools Match Play and Stroke Play Championships.
Last year, the hugely-talented Durcan was crowned Connacht Boys Champion; he was part of the County Sligo Golf Club U18 team that won the Fred Daly All-Ireland Trophy and the Home Nations Championship in La Manga; and he was also a member of the County Sligo team that won the Bulmers Senior Cup in Belfast.
Durcan and the other Enda McCarrick Motors Limited Sligo Post Sports Star of the Week award winners from the month of May will be in the running for the Enda McCarrick Motors Limited Sports Star of Month accolade, which carries with it a prize worth 250 euro, thanks to Enda McCarrick Motors Limited in Carraroe, Sligo’s Mitsubishi dealer.
At the end of the year, all of the award winners will be in the running for the overall Enda McCarrick Motors Limited Sports Star of the Year prize.
In addition to picking up the monthly award, the overall winner will receive a stunning prize of the use of a new Mitsubishi for 2009, courtesy of Enda McCarrick Motors Limited and Mitsubishi.
