McDonaghs Electrical closes

Posted online: Jun 9th, 2009

MCDONAGHS Electrical stopped trading and closed its doors yesterday (Tuesday) and it believed that the firm’s shop in Galway is also to close.
The business founded 60 years ago in 1949 by Vincent McDonagh in Ballymote and the firm expanded to the multi-euro development at the Northwest Business Park in Collooney in 2007.
Shortly after that move the firm was branded as Euronics, a multinational electrical goods conglomerate.
Within a year however McDonaghs was again rebranded, this time with the Expert corporate makeover. This rebranding extended to the original Ballymote shop.
The closure will affect approximately 30 jobs throughout all the locations and will be a worry to employees in other similar businesses in the region.
The unprecedented halt in house building and resulting furnishing, coupled with existing householder’s unwillingness to purchase new ‘white goods’ such as fridges, washing machines and dishwashers while the recession bites is believed to be the primary cause of the collapse of the business.
