THIEVES got a taxi to a Sligo home and attempted to steal a car before fleeing in the same taxi when they were disturbed.
That’s according to Nancy Callaghan of Rathbraughan Park who was given the fright of her life last Sunday after she was roused awake by her security light at 3am.
She looked on the CCTV monitor she has connected to a TV in her bedroom and saw two men attempting to break into her car and a taxi outside her house.
“I didn’t know what to do but I have two young kids in the house and I just feared so much for their safety that I got up the courage to run down to the front door,”
“Then in the heat of the moment I went out the front door and chased them. Looking back I probably shouldn’t have, but it was just a reaction.
“They ran off and just down the street they got into the same taxi that they arrived in. I couldn’t believe it. Did the taxi driver bring to steal my car and then wait on them? What a cheek.”
Miss Callaghan has now encouraged all local people to be vigilant of thieves and has asked that younger people in the community look out for their elderly family members and neighbours.
“This ordeal has left me so frightened and my kids so frightened. I have a 10-year-old daughter and a 16-year-old son living in the house with me we are all terrified after this.
“An older person couldn’t take this kind of shock. They wouldn’t be able for it and after that elderly man dying in Galway last week everyone should be on the look out for the elderly.”
Ms Callaghan also encouraged people to be security conscious in their homes, “I bought a security light and a CCTV monitor recently and it was the best money I ever spent. Everyone should get one,” she said.
The Gardai investigation into the attempted robbery is ongoing.
