By Teresa McGowan

A SLIGO mother has spoken
about her daughter’s rape horror
after the man convicted with
the crime was sentenced to four
and-a-half years in prison.
The 39-year-old Sligo man
pleaded guilty at the Central
Criminal Court to raping the
then 13-year-old girl at his home
between September 1 and October
15 2004.
In the years following the rape
the victim told no one about the
nightmare and tried to commit
suicide by taking pills and when
she told her attacker this he just
laughed.
The mother of the victim, who
can not be named, said the only
reason her child broke the silence
over the ordeal in 2006
was because the rapist was beginning
to grope and groom her
younger sister, who was also at
that time aged just 13.
“No matter how long a prison
sentence he got it would not
have changed the last six years
for us. No about of prison time
would be good enough,” the
inconsolable mother told the
Post.
She added that while the man
apologised in court, he did not
act sorry for three years when
he “said things about my daughter
that are too bad to repeat”.
“I lost myself when I found
out about it,” she said, adding
that she blamed herself for the
crime because she trusted the
man who did it and had been in
a relationship with him.
Their relationship ended several
years before the incident
happened.
“I blame myself like any mother
would. I think that I should have
seen the signs and should have
known but I wasn’t looking for
the signs because I trusted him.

There was a very strong entry at the Leinster U15 Open in our Terenure
Centre last weekend. This tournament was a show of some spectacular
badminton from these stars. And the Irish U15 selectors were in
attendance as an Irish team will be picked over the coming weeks for a
U15 Quadrangular, scheduled to be played in Wales on the weekend 23-25
April 2010.

The opening boy’s singles final was between Wexford’s Nicholas Murphy
and Sligo’s Danny Keown. These boys have duelled many times before in
finals with Keown ahead on titles. In the opening set Murphy was totally
focussed on his mission as he took the first set 21-17. Keown used his
experience in the second set and went on to win 14-21. The final set was
great viewing with Murphy slightly ahead at the mid point 11-9, Keown
levelled the score 11-11. Murphy kept his accuracy on court and both
players rallied very hard until Murphy began to make his presence on
court as he went on to take the title 21-16.

The girl’s singles final was an all Lisburn affair.Alannah Stephenson
took on her doubles partner Keady Smith. Stephenson took the opener
21-14, Keady dug deep in the second set as the rallies were tiring for
both girls, and this set went into a tiebreaker 22-22, 23-23 until
Stephenson composed herself as she took the title 25-23.

Danny Keown was back out on court again looking to take home a title to
Sligo, it was in the boy’s doubles final. His partner was lefthander and
fellow schoolmate Conor Scanlon and their opponents were Lisburn stars
of Ryan Stewart and Jonathon Harron. The Sligo boys took the opening set
21-15. In the second set the Lisburn players found form as they played
some of their best badminton on court, this match went 18-18,19-19…
all the way to 23-21 with Danny and Conor winning this outing and taking
the title back to Sligo. This was a great return for all the hard work
and the boys are looking forward to the nationals in a few weeks

Last match of the tournament was the mixed final and all four players on
court were from the infamous Lisburn Racket Club. Alannah Stephenson was
looking for a hat trick of titles and was partnered by Ryan Stewart.
Their opponents were once again Keady Smith and Jonathon Harron.
Stephenson and Stewart took the opener 21-15 and although their
opponents fought hard Stephenson made it a trice of titles as Stewart
took the double (21-15)

All these players will once again battle on court on the 6th & 7th
February up in Lisburn in the Irish U15 Championship. I would like to
say “well done” to Ita Marron and her team on a very well run
tournament.

Leinster U15 Open Terenure Final Results

Boys Singles: N Murphy bt D Keown 21-17,14-21,21-12 Doubles:D Keown/C
Scanlon bt R Stewart/J Harron 21-15,23-21

Girls Singles:A Stephenson bt K Smith 21-14,25-23 Doubles:A Stephenson/K
Smith bt K Butler/F McCourt 21-6,21-15

Mixed: A Stephenson/R Stewart bt K Smith/J Harron 21-15,21-15

The penultimate week of the Sligo Inter-Cultural Futsal League saw plenty of goals while also setting up a title decider for the final week of action next Wednesday evening. Once again the Ursuline College was the venue and the first game saw the Sligo Rovers Young Guns taking on the second team from the Sligo Immigrant Workers Organisation. The Rovers Young Guns started well and led 3-0 at half time thanks to goals from Niall Howley and Gavin Butler with Butler getting two. Howley added two further goals at the start of the second half as the Young Guns opened up a 5-1 lead. However SIO 2 came back to within two goals but strikes from Kieran McLoughlin and Brendan Mooney ensured that the Young Guns held on for a 7-4 win their first victory in the competition.

The second game was a meeting of two of the unbeaten sides in the competition as Sligo Rovers 1 took on Globe House 1. In what was a real end to end game Rovers 1 won 8-4 to set up a title decider against the other side from the Sligo Immigrant Workers Organisation. Rovers 1 blitzed the Globe House side in the first half as they raced into a 5-0 lead thanks to goals from Nilo Ramos, Colin Feehily, Adam Hynes, Gavin O’Dwyer and an own goal. Two more goals at the start of the second half from Darragh Healy and Adam Hynes saw that lead stretch to seven. However the Rovers then eased up which is not something you can necessarily do as Globe House scored four goals in succession to get themselves back into the game. However Rovers regrouped as a second goal from Ramos proved to be the crucial score in the game as they picked up the win.

The last round of games including the title decider is on Wednesday night in the Ursuline College. The action gets underway at 7 o’clock.

Results:

Team 2 (Sligo Rovers Young Guns) 7 – 4 Team 4 (SIO 2)
Team 1 (Sligo Rovers 1) 8 – 4 Team 3 (Globe House 1)

Fixtures:

Team 4 (SIO 2) vs. Team 3 (Globe House 1)
Team 2 (Sligo Rovers Young Guns) vs. Team 6 (Globe House 2)
Team 1 (Sligo Rovers 1) vs. Team 5 (SIO 1)

MINOR MEDAL PRESENTATION: to our victorious Minor Shield Champions took place in the cosy atmosphere of Roisin Dubh on Friday night last January 29th. Master of ceremonies was Kieran McGill who opened proceedings and called on Minor Team captain Kieran McGovern, who thanked his fellow panel members, the mentors Michael Hannon, Kevin Gallagher and Kieran McGill before inviting the panel members forward to receive their medals. Medals were presented by Harps and Sligo Senior players Ross Donovan and Tony Taylor. There was some mis matching in the marking with one man giving away a height advantage despite a few switches. Michael Hannon spoke on behalf of the team mentors and praised the skill, effort and determination of the team who got their just rewards in the end. Michael wished the best of luck to those members leaving the minor grade and welcomed all those joining from the under sixteens, as well as thanking all who had an input in the success of last year. Thanks to Ted and the McGowan family for hosting the event and providing refreshments on the night.
MINOR LEAGUE: throws in this weekend, we have a bye in round one so our debut will be Sunday week 14th. Training continues, contact Michael Hannon for full details.
EXECUTIVE MEETING: will take place this Thursday 4th in clubhouse at 9.00pm. All members of the Executive are asked to attend.

The weekend of January 30th saw Allwin Tennis players Shauna Smith and Joseph Murphy, both of Ballina, take part in the Will to Win London Grand Prix finals, where they competed against players from London, New York and Dubai at the Lawn Tennis Association national training academy in Roehampton. The tournament, run by Will to Win in London is aimed at players new to competitive tennis who play at schools, parks and public centres. It provides an opportunity for young people from all backgrounds to participate in an exciting international tennis event, with players from London, Dubai, and New York taking part in the event this year.

Shauna and Joe competed against the winners from the grand prix events in London, Dubai and New York. Although London and Dubai proved very strong, Shauna and Joe put up a brave fight and did themselves proud. Coach Olwyn O’Toole commented ‘ the standard of play at community venues in London and Dubai is phenomenal – it really goes to show that with a little dedication and match practice you can achieve a top level of tennis irrelevant of the facilities you are playing in.’

The match-ups with New York were a much closer affair with Joseph taking 5 games from Caleb Williamson and Shauna pushing Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert to 7-5 in the second set.

The players were awarded their prizes by two time US Open doubles champion Roger Taylor, who during his career also reached the singles quarter finals of the French Open, semi finals of the Australian Open and was Wimbledon semi finalist on three occasions including in 1970 when he defeated defending champion Rod Laver en route. Olwyn pointed out ‘ it was amazing to have a player who has achieved so much on hand for the presentation – especially a player who started playing on park courts.’

Steve Riley – Director of Will to Win commented ‘Tennis is a great game played all over the world, we want to develop community themed tournament to be a worldwide experience for parks and public centre players. It is a fantastic opportunity for younger players from different countries to be brought together via sport.’

Olwyn O’Toole of Allwin Tennis added ‘we are delighted to be asked to take part in an event like this. Grass roots sports is where it all starts and we are starting to make some impact on grass roots tennis in Ireland now, with over 500 children availing of coaching at park and community facilities across Sligo, Leitrim, Roscommon and Mayo on an ongoing basis throughout the year. To have an event like this now in London that showcases the best players from community programmes around the world just shows you don’t have to be a member of a fancy club to get your shot on the international scene. We look forward to next years event and hope to make the Irish qualifiers a national event in 2010 – so keep a look out for your opportunity to take part in next years event.’
