The North Division Junior Final was played in splendid conditions in Drumcliffe’s Rs/Pt GAA Park Oxfield on Friday 4th June between Coolera St/Hill and St Molaise Gaels. This final lived up to its pre match billing as both teams displayed high levels of skill, teamwork, impressive and tenacious defending and great score taking. The game went into extra time as it was nearly impossible to separate the teams. The supporters surely got great value for their money as the result was in doubt up to the final few minutes of the extra time period.
From the throw in St Molaise Gaels were the first of the blocks with two fine scores from Martin Feeney but Coolera responded with three excellent scores from Chris Walsh, Larry Cadden and Finbar Smith which put them into a one point lead. St Molaise replied with a wonder score from Martin Feeney and brought the teams level. Coolera added some outstanding scores from Paddy Gillen, and Finbar Smith and were ahead at the short whistle by two points – 7pts to 5pts. St Molaise Gaels upped the intensity at the start of the second half and had three stunning scores from super sub Jason Brennan which edged them ahead. Coolera then got a penalty which was expertly taken by Finbar Smith but a marvellous save from Peter Davis prevented a score. Two wonder scores from Kevin Cooney and Finbar Smith levelled the scores for Coolera St/Hill and just as the final whistle was about to be blown St Molaise Gaels were awarded a penalty which was well taken by Martin Feeney but a top drawer save from Fergus Flynn kept Coolera in the game. The first half of extra time commenced with Martin Feeney putting St Molaise Gaels into the lead with a well taken point but this was followed by a brilliant levelling score from Larry Cadden. Dara Fallon sent over a good point from play to leave St Molaise Gaels ahead by one point at the second short whistle. This lead was short lived as at start of the second half of extra time Finbar Smith sent over a difficult free to level the scores again. St Molaise Gaels found a new source of energy and Sean Gilmartin got his name on the scoreboard with a marvellous long range point which put them ahead and they followed with stunning scores from Martin Feeney(1gl, 1pt), Dara Fallon(1pt), Diarmaid Feeney(1pt). Final score was 1- 16 to 0—12. This was a very exciting and thrilling game of football and impartially refereed by Gerry Higgins. The Marchievicz Cup was presented to a delighted St Molaise Gaels captain Diarmaid Feeney by the North Board Chairman Brian Drury among scenes of unbridled joy. The Chairman thanked the referee Gerry Higgins, the Drumcliffe Ros/Pt Club for the use of their splendid facilities, all the Clubs who participated in the competition and Tom Haran for all his hard work in organising the competition..
Teams on duty:- St Molaise Gaels- Peter Davis, Phillip Lange, Declan Currid, Eddie Moran, Damien Kelly, Brian O’Connor, Blair Foley, Shane Feeney, Sean Gilmartin, Gerard Watters, Martin Feeney, Eamonn Burns, Diarmaid Feeney, Glen McHugh, Darren Mc Govern. Subs used Jason Brennan, Dara Fallon, Jimmy Currid.
Coolera St/Hill:- Fergus Flynn, Colm Scanlon, Kevin Cooney, Stephen O’Hara, Peter Laffey, Alan Kelly, Ciaran Maloney, Gary Cawley, Francis Gaughan, Finbar Smith, Christopher Walsh, Paddy Gillen, Padraig Gaughan, Martin Savage, Larry Cadden.

Ian Keenan said he was proud of a win that was “a long time coming” after a final round 67 gave him a one stroke victory at 11 under par at the Castle Dargan Irish Masters PGA EuroPro Tour event in Sligo.
Keenan (Royal Liverpool) led the tournament after the opening round at six under par, and a second round 70 saw him tee off one stroke behind final round leader Andrew Thorpe.
Three birdies on the front nine saw Keenan seize the initiative as Thorpe dropped an early shot. An eagle at the tenth saw him strengthen his position but he admitted a wobble at the 16th had him worried – before he composed himself to finish one stroke clear of Justin Evans.
“It’s a long time coming to be honest, and at the 16th hole I thought I might have blown it,” said Keenan, who pockets £10,000 for the win. “I had a stinking lie after over-shooting the green and I thought I’d hit a good shot too. But I got away with just the bogey and gathered myself well, and I’m delighted with the win.
“I deserved this though after the way I played from tee to green all week,” said the Hoylake pro. “I said to my roommate that this course was perfect for me and I knew I was playing well. The 65 in the opening round showed that, and the 70 yesterday was good too, but it’s a three-round tournament and there were some great scores out there – look at Paul Maddy’s 64 (second round) – so one low round was never going to be enough.
“Putting pressure on down the front nine was important but with such a bunched leader board, I couldn’t allow myself to be too distracted as players could come from anywhere to pass you,” said the 34 year-old. “I just stuck to my guns and I’m very proud of that performance.”
Evans (Wentworth Club) was level par after nine holes, with two bogeys swiftly followed by two birdies. It was an eagle at the tenth that kept Evans interested in the trophy, with birdies at 12 and 15 taking him to 11 under, but a bogey at 17 meant he had to settle for second place at ten under.
Daniel Belch took third spot after a fine final round of 65. Belch (Hillside GC) did the damage on the front nine, with three birdies from the fourth followed by another at the eighth. A fifth birdie came at the tenth before his first blip – a bogey at 14. But Belch replied instantly with his sixth and final birdie of the day at the 15th to finish at nine under for the tournament.
The sixth hole was a popular one over the three rounds for all the players, and Irish duo Tim Rice and Paul O’Hanlon both picked up eagles there on the way to finishing tied for fourth place at seven under. Rice (Limerick) picked up five birdies in his four under par 67, while O’Hanlon (Curragh) also eagled the tenth before three bogeys down the back reduced him to a round of 69. Elliot Saltman (Aegon) joined the Irishmen in fourth spot, matching O’Hanlon’s eagle at ten in a one under par round of 70. Younger brother Zack (Aegon) began the day at six under par like Elliot, but shot a 74 to finish back in a tie for 15th at three under.
Thorpe (Peterborough Milton) went into the final round with a one shot lead overnight ahead of playing partner Keenan and eventual runner-up Evans. Thorpe suffered an early blow after bogeying the second hole, but he remained in the hunt at the last thanks to birdies at the sixth, ninth and 15th to sit one stroke behind Keenan at 18. But Thorpe took an eight at the last after finding the water with his tee shot and dropped down to six under for the tournament.
Three players joined Thorpe at seven under – James Busby (The Shropshire) and Brian McElhinney (Team Ireland) both carded 70s while James Freeman (Worksop GC) was level in his final round.

The coaching session intitled “come and try it” proved to be a huge success. Girls ranging in ages from 7 – 13 years old took part from the Holy Family NS, Curry NS, Bunninadden NS, Cloonacool NS, Achonary NS, Moylough NS, Drimina NS and Castlerock NS. Under the guidance of Connacht camogie officer – Caroline Murray and with help from Sligo Hurling GPO Johnny Mullins and Rachael Muldoon from the Holy Family primary school everything ran smoothly. Thanks to Tubbercurry GAA ground staff for their excellant facilities and especially to Mick Burke.
